This one is for the Rt.Hon. Miss Alice Band's House, another of the four all-female School Houses. A word of explanation here. There is one of those irritating little continuity errors in the Discworld canon. In the Assassins' Guild Yearbook, and in the Discworld Companions, it is made perfectly clear that Alice Band is the Housemistress of Tump House. However, in the notes accomanying the Kidby illustration of Alice in "the Art of Discworld", Terry, in his own words, makes her Housemistress of the all-female Mantis house.

This is another of those non-canonical House badges for the Guild of Assassins School, which are such fun to create. We know from practice on Earth that once big businessmen make it, they tend to practice selective altruism, like spending some of that money on endowing an Oxbridge professorate, or sponsoring capital investment at a prestigious public school. This makes them look like philanthropists and diverts attention away from how they may have earnt the money in the first place. It is therefore entirely possible that Reacher Gilt, the man who had the Tump Tower built in Ankh-Morpork, endowed the Assassins' Guild school with enough money to fund a new House. Good publicity and it gets the Assassins onside and favourably disposed.

Now Tump House makes a kind of sense. We knoww from the Canon that each House at the Assassins Guild School has its own unique crest, but none are elaborated upon. What if...</ins>

<ins style="font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none;">This is another of those non-canonical House badges for the Guild of Assassins School, which are such fun to create. However, in the notes accomanying the Kidby illustration of Alice in "the Art of Discworld", Terry, in his own words, makes her Housemistress of the all-female Mantis house.</ins>

<ins style="font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none;">Now Tump House makes a kind of sense. We know from practice on Earth that once big businessmen make it, they tend to practice selective altruism, like spending some of that money on endowing an Oxbridge professorate, or psonsoring capital investment at a prestigious public school. Good publicity and it gets the Assassins onside and favourably disposed.</ins>

<ins style="font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none;">But. Gilt's disgrace and fall makes it very likely anyone associated with him would seek to break contact very quickly. Hence the re-naming of Tump House. By analogy with the other female Houses at the Assassins' School, which are named after creatures whose females are attitudinal towards the male (Raven, Black Widow and Scorpion), then another attitudinal female is the Preying Mantis - a creature that bites off the male's head just after sex, and then eats him. Thus:</ins>

<ins style="font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none;">Escutcheon divisée de bande gules bearing motto "Sororitas Deinque Misericordia". Good point! Eleanor Lance = Alice Band - I can see definite asociations there. --AgProv 20:32, 30 November 2009 (UTC)

But I think I've worked it out now: some of the newer Assassins' Guild houses appear, quite boringly, to be simply (?) named after areas of the city. Thus Tump House, Welcome Soap House, Broken Moons (Plaza) House. Unless Welcome Soap has a history in the eyes of the Guild (who or what may have been inhumed here ?) this is fairly prosaic. --AgProv 10:35, 3 December 2008 (UTC)

There's an interesting point of view, expressed on the wikipedia pages on the Assassins' Guild and other places, that in order to meet the costs of refurbishment of the Guild school, and the set-up costs of admitting what has been estimated to be 180 female pupils per year, the Guild sought external sponsorship, in the same manner that prestigious British public schools put the hat out to old boys who have done well in business or to the sort of never-been-boys who nevertheless want the social cachet of being associated with Eton, Winchester, Harrow, et c.

Thus, Tump House would have been paid for by sponsorship money from what at the time is likely to have been one of Ankh-Morpork's richest businesses, the Grand Trunk (based on Tump Tower). Reacher Gilt would have seen the advantages: advertising, good PR, having the Guild onside, his being seen as a respectable businessman, and driving home the ideological message that much more can be gained socially from the private charity of rich benefactors giving of their own free will (rather than being taxed heavily by a left-wing State that then wastes the money). This last point was firmly held by Margaret Thatcher, Ayn Rand and other right-wing ideologues. --AgProv 10:36, 16 April 2010 (UTC)
