Former Head of the [[Assassins' Guild|Guild of Assassins]], Dr (an honorific? Did Mr Downey become Dr Downey on his elevation, and later become [[Lord Downey]]?) Cruces (viz. 'crucify' or 'excruciating') was driven mad by the appalling power inherent in the [[gonne]] after it had engineered the death of [[Edward d'Eath]].

First encountered in {{P}}, Dr Cruces was an intelligent, well-educated (well - of course: the Guild of Assassins is the best education in [[Ankh-Morpork]] if you can get to graduation...) and powerful figure within the guilds and the city. He was a lean figure and was always softly-spoken, though with 'the pitch and spin that could make (his voice) be heard through a hurricane'.

But it is in {{MAA}} that we really come to know Dr Cruces. He is the mentor to whom the frighteningly obsessive d'Eath turns, and is swiftly killed for his pains. Cruces takes up the gonne - and, for some reason, d'Eath's mania for reintroducing a royal family to Ankh-Morpork. He is chased by [[Sam Vimes]] and [[Carrot Ironfoundersson]]. Samuel Vimes is briefly tempted to take up the Gonne himself, but Carrot, on the other hand, has a refreshingly direct approach to Cruces' blandishments, destroys the Gonne, and swiftly kills Cruces without a word.

Exit Cruces...

Enter Dr Downey as the newly-appointed Head of the Guild, and the time-honoured profession of artistically exercising lethal prejudice for a fee continues with barely a hiccough.

"Cruces" means "crosses" in Spanish.

'''WIlinus Pass''' was a mountain pass leading into [[Uberwald]]. The road from [[Ankh-Morpork]] to [[Bonk]] passed through here, and wagons and ox trains frequented the road. As did [[Bandits' Guild|bandits]], at least until [[Sam Vimes]] passes through on his way to Bonk to serve as Ankh-Morpork's ambassador. Vimes, [[Detritus]], and [[Cheery Littlebottom]] fought them, but it was [[Inigo Skimmer]], an [[Assassins' Guild|Assassin]], who did the most damage. Vimes and the others made their escape, leaving Inigo surrounded by enemies. However, he quickly killed all of the bandits and caught up with Vimes by nightfall.

Rumors about this attack in Wilinus Pass spread rapidly through Uberwald, and these rumors all put Vimes as the killer of thirty men and a dog at Wilinus. As a result, Vimes becomes accustomed to hearing whispered phrases like "Wilinus", and "thirty men and a dog" wherever he goes. But ''also'' as a result, Vimes finds he has no trouble getting past guards... at least once they know who he is.

The Wilinus Pass was also once the scene of yet another so-called 'Battle of Koom Valley', although Captain Carrot describes this particular one as "more of a fracas".
