A gypsy-like tribe who travel the villages and homesteads of the World, bringing culture, civilization and a good read whatever the weather.

It was said they could tell what book you needed just by looking at you, and they could take your voice away with a nod.

They may exchange passing nods, as well as copies of Anecdotes of the Great Accountants with any Travelling Accountants they meet on the road.

Even in the worst winter, the idea of burning any of that paper to keep warm is totally anathema, to the consternation of any passing Feegles.

Some titles they relied on themselves when stuck in a snowdrift, with no food, and down to their last candle:

* Survival in the Snow, T.H. Mouseholder
* Among the Snow Weasels, K. Pierpoint Poundsworth
* Cooking in Dire Straits, Superflua Raven
* The Habits of Wolves, Captain W.E. Lightly

In the most extreme circumstances and despite certain oddities of expression, they still managed to rightly interpret the Feegles request, and supplied them with an aid to Tiffany, PASSION'S PLAYTHING by Marjory J. Boddice (a tortured tale of a tempestuous romance by the author of Sundered Hearts!!!).
Miss Flitcroft says: "And I thought, what life expects me to do now is moon around the place in the wedding dress for years and go completely doolally. That's what it want me to do.
That'a it! 86.3.134.58, or may i call you 86 for short, I shake your hand. You've got it in one there - there is a definite link, a definite association between the two literary characters, but this is the Discworld. Of course a thrifty farmer would put the wedding dress in the rag-bag and make sure the wedding spread is eaten to the last crumb.
Twice chastened! I trust at least the quotation from the book was accurate. "86"

Ned Simnel was the blacksmith and tinkerer on the stifling plains where Miss Renata Flitworth had her farm, and where Bill Door once came a-knocking with a task. He was one of those difficult men who not only know what a three-eighths Gripley was, but also how to use it...

Ned was charged with destroying - "Killing utterly" - a common-or-garden scythe so that it could be used in the shadowy world between life and death, but could not bring himself to destroy the blade which Bill Door had honed to perfection.

Ned was also the inventor of the Combination Harvester, a reaper of corn that horrified Bill Door utterly. This mechanical contrivance was to be the dawning of a new technological age on the Disc, but unfortunately came to grief when Bill Door needed the tarpaulin from around it during a very fierce storm, and at the same time removed a small but vital part, a three-eighths Gripley.

An islander in Nation. He had a twisted leg, so was not a warrior, but he was a good hunter, who taught the boys a lot. They laughed at his funny walk behind his back, but when Mau asked him about his leg, he said he didn't mind. It was a gift, not a curse. When much is taken, something is given back. Since he had a useless leg, he had a sharp mind, and had to use it. He had noticed Mau among the other boys, as a bit different. He taught him the word that drives sharks away.

The Grandfathers occur in Nation. At first they are a nagging voice in the head of Mau, demanding that he fufll the rites expected of a man of Nation, particularly those that belong to them, such as preparing beer and leaving it outside their cave each day.

It is one-way traffic. They do not respond to his plea that being only a boy he was not shown how to do these things. Daphne becomes aware of the voice of the Grandmothers, who tell her the Grandfathers are "echoes in a cave", not bad people, but that as old men they do not notice the turning of the world. "The world must turn," the say. "Tell Mau he must roll away the stone."

The physical Grandfathers are to be found in the Cave of the Grandfathers. They were joined there by one or two exceptional warriors in every fifty years, whose dead bodies were mumified in the hot sand before being taken into the Cave. The entrance to the cave is blocked by a stone needing ten men to move it.

Mau and Daphne and the priest Ataba enter the cave, though this would have been unthinkable before the wave.

They pass mumified Grandfathers, who are seated against the wall, each one having on their arms the tattoo of wave and sun that the men had on Nation. They pass more than 100, and carry on past countless others, until in the end they come to the God Pool. Obviously people have been brought here for a very long time. When Daphne tells her father about it, she thought that the God Pool might be more than one hundred thousand years old, an overestimate perhaps. On their way out of the cave, someone brushes against the first Grandfather, who in falling over starts a domino collapse of all the others, and turns to dust. They run to leave the cave ahead of choking clouds of dust, the last state of the Grandfathers.
