This could be a very early echo of , foreshadowing a book to be written some time later, and providing an interesting insight into the way TP's fertile mind works. Also of interest in this context, of course, the body of Opera dealing with Ancient Egypt, such as Verdi's Aïda, or Haydn's Queen of Sheba. (Thinks - are there any references in P to these classic operas?)--80.177.253.74 11:57, 6 February 2009 (UTC)

Wears quite possibly the most unique shorts in the world, on acount of his species. This calls for a tailor who can accomodate very short legs and a massive reptilian tail.

He took quite a shine to Rinso and even gave him a few free beers.

Was heard to compliment Rinso on his wizardly abilities (actually Trickster working to protect him from harm) and wistfully remark Wish I could do that, mate.

Considering elsewhere on the Disc there is such an entity as Offler the Crocodile-headed God who can do all this and more, this speaks volumes for how long XXXX has been cut off from the rest of the Discworld.

A lot of the drinkers in the pub are actually humanoid animals. Considering that elsewhere on the disc (Genua) these have usually been created by Lily Weatherwax and are somewhere on the far side of insane, (or else are the insane animal-headed Gods of Djelibeybi), it's interesting to ponder on how well-adjusted they are by comparison. Nothing is said on how they came into being, though.

Hi to k-t-jones! I love the idea of the Cubes turning out to be Great A'Tuin's black-box flight recorders - definite shades of Strata here (where that particular Discworld turns out in the end to be a manufactured construct). I know he wouldn't have introduced the Devices as an arbitrary thing, or just to facilitate the plot of . Something is brewing here that will no doubt be explained in future books. It just seems uncharacteristically crude of Pterry to bring these in from nowhere and leave them undefined and unexplained - not his usual style.

After all, one of the oldest clichés in literature is the deus ex machina - the sudden appearance out of completely nowhere of a plot twist, artefact, or arbitary twist of fate which enables the heroes to get out of otherwise insoluble difficulty or to right everything so that Good prevails, as if a God has suddenly decided to enter the Machine. Being Discworld, there is a twist involved here: the Devices are more of a machinum ex Dea the absolute opposite, a machine provided out of nowhere by the Gods, which nudges the plot of along as well as providing a rationale for Vetinari's Undertaking, to be expanded upon in later books.

I know TP has said he wants there to be a definite end to the Discworld series and - worryingly - he's hinted that there won't be that many more books.

In one sense, tidying up the loose ends by returning to the concept of Strata, one of his first books, where the Discworld turns out to be an artificial world run by computers, might be an intellectually satisfying way to wind up the series.

But somehow it doesn't feel right...--AgProv 12:31, 19 July 2007 (CEST)

"though he doesn't begrudge Adam for stopping the Apocalypse." A perfectly understandable attitude on Death's part, as, if you read Revelations carefully, when the Apocalypse is over there is no need any more for Death, who must himself submit to death and cease to exist. Death, who like Crowley and Aziraphile, would be seriously inconvenienced by the end of the world, would also have a vested interest in postponing, or preferentially, averting it.
