Captain Burns appears in NW, as the quietly competent cavalry captain who with a completely straight face, assures Samuel Vimes that anyone singing the national anthem and waving the flag doesn't class as a rebel, despite the fact they've built what looks like a barricade but is probably just people's furniture, moved out into the street to facilitate spring cleaning, as can be expected in the month of May. He then salutes Vimes - the salute is returned with equal respect - and departs. Although he reports to Major Clive Mountjoy-Standfast, his commanding officer, that this Keel person is more than just a Watch sergeant - he's used to serious command.

A Wizard who devised a spell to make an entire tree disappear. He just forgot he was sitting in it at the time. His sad demise offered a clue to Ponder Stibbons as to the underlying syntax of magical spells (used to program Hex as its equivalent of a computer language), as it was noted that Fundall's despairing scream of "Not THIS bit!" was not accepted by the syntax of his spell as a valid sub-set of "Make this tree disappear!"

This is evidently the equivalent of "Bad command or syntax" in spellcasting.

Ralph "Grumbling" Gibbons was quite possibly Ankh-Morpork's greatest artist in wood, responsible among other things for the creation of the exquisite carved wooden doors of the Thieves' Guild headquarters on the corner of Broadway and the Street of Alchemists.

The Guild's gallows, these days more ornamental rather than functional (although unlicenced thieves are wise not to try and push their luck) is also described as a riot of rococo carving by Gibbons.

Sadly, after finishing his commission for the Guild, Gibbons, described as "not a happy man", committed quite a messy suicide using a spokeshave.
Another grimace name substitution from the RoundWorld. Grinling Gibbons(1648 - 1721) was a master carver, some say the master carver, discovered by John Evelyn. Gibbons' work can be seen at St Paul's Cathedral, Petworth House and elsewhere.
Chubby was owned by a blacksmith in Easy Street, who was using him as a forge, to the great displeasure of Sybil Ramkin. He was brought to the Sunshine Sanctuary for Sick Dragons, but when he seemingly escaped from his pen, Lady Sybil asked Captain Vimes and the rest of the Watch to keep an eye out.

Chubby had not liked the Sanctuary- the blacksmith had not been an unkind man, and he had gotten all the coal he could eat. But in the Sanctuary, there were lots of other dragons, and people had given him unfamiliar coal. Therefore, when someone had taken him out of the Sanctuary in the middle of the night, he had assumed he was going back to the blacksmith. But d'Eath placed him in a box with a mirror right next to the Assassins' Guild's museum. The dragon, seeing an enemy in the mirror, and flamed at it until he exploded. The destruction blasted the walls of the museum apart and allowed Edward d'Eath to steal the Gonne.
